THE GIDEON COMPLEX: When Calling Exceeds Credentials

You’ve put in the work. You’ve endured the sleepless nights, the endless meetings, and that tiring interview process that felt more like a police interrogation. Then, the news comes: You got the job. Or maybe it’s that huge business contract you’ve been chasing and the email pops up: The client has just signed.

You should be celebrating. But instead of a victory lap, you’re mentally walking barefoot on hot stones. You’re looking behind you, waiting for someone to tap you on the shoulder and say, "Sorry, we realised we made a mistake. You're actually not the one we wanted."

This is Impostor Syndrome. I define it as that persistent feeling of inadequacy and wrong belief that you don’t deserve to be where you are. Simply put: you do not see yourself  being as capable as others believe you are. According to Dr. Valerie Young, a leading expert on the subject, "people who feel like impostors hold themselves to unrealistic, unsustainable standards of competence" (Young, 2022). She identifies and explains 5 different types of Impostor Syndrome.

It Manifests Everywhere

Impostor syndrome is a silent thief that doesn't just stay at the office; it follows you home.

  •  In the Workplace: It’s that promotion to a leadership role where you feel the job should have gone to a "more qualified" or "more experienced" colleague.
  •  At Home: It attacks us as fathers and mothers. You feel like you aren't providing enough or disciplining the kids correctly. You might even feel like you don't want them following in your footsteps because you doubt your own path.
  •  Among Siblings: Especially for first-borns, the weight of responsibility and privilege can feel misplaced. You might think another sibling is better placed to perform at that level.

But here is the reality: Very few people are immune to this. It affects people in every sphere of life. But if we are to live to our full potential, we must come against it.

The "Mighty" Man in Hiding

There’s a powerful story in the Bible about a man named Gideon that captures this struggle perfectly. When the Angel of the Lord found Gideon, he was hiding in a winepress, trying to process food while staying out of sight of the enemy.

The Angel looked at this man hiding in a hole and said: "The Lord is with you, mighty man of valor!"(Judges 6:12).

What a contradiction! Gideon was acting like a coward, yet Heaven called him a hero. Gideon’s internal "impostor" immediately started talking back. He replied, "I am the least in my father's house, and my tribe is the least in Israel." He was telling God, "You’ve got the wrong guy. My background doesn't match this title."

He even put out fleeces, testing God three times, because he doubted the word of God about his own identity. He just could not see himself as a leader.

The Mindset Shift

Gideon eventually became one of the greatest leaders Israel ever had, but it required a massive mindset shift. Once he stopped succumbing to the syndrome and believed he could perform at the level God claimed he could, everything changed.

The first thing he did was find the courage to break down the idol-worshipping places in his father’s house. When we get rid of impostor syndrome, that’s exactly what happens to us:

  •  We begin to act like the people we truly are.
  •  We fit into those seemingly "big shoes" at work.
  •  We take our rightful positions as leaders in family and community.

Rising to the Occasion

Impostor syndrome is not a good thing to have. It keeps us from achieving our full potential and true purpose. If a new job, promotion, or big responsibility has come your way, don't let the "Gideon Complex" keep you in the background.

Believe in yourself, believe the Word spoken over you, and rise to the occasion. You are capable of performing at the higher level you've been called to.

WHAT DOES THE QUALITY OF YOUR WORK SAY ABOUT YOU? The Tabitha test for the Modern Workforce

Then and Now

When I left my last employer in Europe, I made sure to leave a welcome pack for my successor. It was a summary of tips, lessons learnt and hyper links to manuals and documents required to get started on the job. If my predecessor had done the same for me, I would have gratefully averted the headless chicken chaos that characterised my first day working as a foreigner in a new country.

Fast forward to my devotion time today, I was reading about a lady called Dorcas, also known as Tabitha. She is known to most bible readers for her resurrection miracle through Peter in the book of Acts, but what really stood out to me as a lesson for today's professionals, business people, and students was her work legacy before that miracle.

A Woman on a Mission

At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did (Acts 9:36).

Tabitha was no doubt a hard worker. She was diligent, had purpose, and was very clear about her mission in the marketplace.

But it happened in those days that she became sick and died...Then Peter arose and... all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them (Acts 9:37-39).

By the time of her death, she had already left such a lasting impact on all those who knew her that when Peter arrived at her home, they were crying and showing him the "works of her hands".

In other words, Tabitha's work was of such excellent quality, and she was so productive and useful to her community, that while people mourned, they couldn't help but show off the products she had made for them.

Let’s turn the focus to you: when you left your last employer or finished with your most recent client, could you confidently imagine them proudly showing off your work to others? Whether the answer is yes or no, it's a matter of quality.

The Marketplace Challenge

As kingdom people, we have an opportunity every single day to do our work excellently and to be generous to others. But we must ask ourselves the hard questions:

  • What does the way you do your job speak about you? If your work was put on display today like Tabitha’s dresses, would it stand the test of scrutiny?
  • Does your work represent the Kingdom? Can people see the excellence of God in the way you handle a project or an assignment?
  • Would you be proud of it yourself? Are you putting your signature on things that reflect your true potential as well as your values?
  • Or are you in it just for the money? Is that job or business just a pay check, or is it a mission?

Recently during a teaching series at church, we were challenged:

Can the people who know you smell any scent of Christianity around you? If you were accused of being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?

For Tabitha, the answer was obvious. She was evidently a believer, very generous, and diligent in her work. People missed her because she had built a good name through her handiwork.

Our Mission Field

Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord (Acts 9:41-42).

By being good ambassadors in the market place, we attract others to the Kingdom of God. We need to take the jobs, businesses and places where the Lord has positioned us as our mission field. Let us be hardworking, generous to those around us and fully dedicated to the task at hand.

Friends, the Tabitha test is here. Let your good work speak louder than your words and titles. Your legacy is being written now. Don't be remembered (or forgotten) for mediocrity.

A CAUSE TO LIVE FOR

Stop Waiting for Purpose; It’s Right in Front of You

This past weekend, I had the privilege of speaking to the men of Cohort 13 in the Man of Honour program on the topic "A Cause to Live For." My message was clear: we are called to be men on a mission. However, too many of us are stuck, held back by the pervasive lie that we must first "discover our purpose" before we can truly begin to live.

The Deception of Waiting

It's a common mindset: "Once I find my life's purpose, then I'll start doing something meaningful." Yet, while people wait for this grand revelation, they often miss countless daily opportunities to serve, to love, and to make an impact right where they are.

The truth is, purpose isn’t something you find; it’s something you live.

Love God, Serve People. That’s the Mission

Jesus summarised it in two commands that clarify our mission:

  1. Love God with all your heart.

  2. Love your neighbour as yourself.

And how exactly do we love our neighbour? By serving them. This, in its simplest form, is our daily purpose. Instead of waiting for some monumental, dramatic calling, we should be actively using our gifts, skills, and experiences today to help those around us.

Jesus: The Perfect Example

Jesus' ultimate purpose was to die on the cross for humanity. But He didn't just wait around for that moment. Every single day, He was healing, teaching, discipling and helping people. He didn't say, "I'll just eat, sleep, and wait to die." No, He served diligently right up until the very end.

If Jesus, who understood His mission better than anyone, didn't waste time waiting, why do we?

The Warning of the Priest and Levite

Consider the parable of the Good Samaritan. The priest and the Levite were men who we can all agree understood their calling; they were meant to serve God. Yet, when they encountered a wounded man in desperate need, they walked right past him. Why? Because they believed they had more important "spiritual" work to do.

They were so fixated on their "big purpose" that they completely missed their immediate, real purpose: serving the person right in front of them.

Live Your Purpose Now

Here’s the liberating truth: Purpose is a journey, not a destination. You don’t wait for it. You live it every single day by serving, loving, and making a tangible difference right where you are.

Stop waiting for perfect clarity or a grand revelation. Start now. Find one way you can help someone TODAY. Use what you have, right where you are. That's how you truly find and fulfill your purpose.

What’s one way you can serve someone today?

From Connections to Careers: Lessons from the KBF Roundtable

We recently gathered for our Monday Zoom seminar, which was the Koora Business Fellowship (KBF) roundtable. It served as a powerful wrap-up and a comprehensive round-up of our monthly focus on the vital topic of professional and business networking.
It was deeply inspiring and interesting to hear our members share their raw, real-life stories. They opened up about how they initially started networking, alongside the unique challenges and hurdles they faced along the way. True to our established KBF culture, whenever we finish a major topic, we do not just leave it there. We concluded the session by sharing the practical steps we will take to ensure that these lessons actively change our lives and finances, rather than just remaining passive information we have received.
The Crusade Connection: When Faith Meets Opportunity
The first testimony came from a professional currently working in the non-profit sector. He shared a remarkable story of how he was invited by a relative to attend a gospel crusade. At the time, he assumed his sole purpose for attending was to serve as a language interpreter, translating the sermon for the visiting man of God who was preaching.
To his complete surprise, that spiritual assignment turned out to be a divine connection for a job. Through this encounter, he connected deeply with the guest preacher he was interpreting for. This divine meeting blossomed into a powerful partnership, leading them to co-found and launch a non-governmental organisation together. This serves as an excellent example of how networking within the right, faith-filled circles enables you to meet the exact people who can alter your career trajectory.
The Power of Generational Favour in Kampala
Next, a committee member shared her inspiring story about how she secured her teaching job at her current workplace, which is one of the most prominent and prestigious schools in Kampala, Uganda. That life-changing connection was traced back to her paternal aunt, who happened to be a close personal friend of the school's headmistress.
Can you imagine the power of that relational network? Because these two older women were friends and part of the same trusted circle, the formal interview process was uniquely simplified. The only interview she was subjected to was a simple spelling test. Imagine going for a job interview at a top institution expecting big, tough, complicated questions, and all you get is a spelling test! She noted that she is naturally very good at spelling, but that is beside the point. It beautifully demonstrates that someone simply wanted to give her an open door because of a trusted recommendation.
Obedience: The Spark That Ignites Destiny
I also shared my personal journey from right after I graduated from university. I was actively looking for a job and held a big dream to become an auditor or a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). I chose to utilise my father’s professional network. My dad is a dedicated Rotarian and has been around the professional space for a long time, so he was able to give me a direct contact at Ernst & Young.
The contact was for the country managing partner himself. However, when I arrived at the office, the gentleman was extremely busy. Instead of turning me away, he kindly asked me to see one of his youngest managers. That young manager told me something that changed my life forever. I truly would not be where I am today if I had not followed his specific advice. After listening to my career goals, he looked at me and said, "Just go to the ACCA office, sign up, and start your studies today."
Ladies and gentlemen, that is exactly what I did that very day. I left his office, walked straight to the national country office for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and registered as a student on the spot. The rest, as they say, is history. I am now a certified public accountant and I am thoroughly enjoying my career in the finance and accountancy space.
The Principle of the Faithful Servant
Our last story highlighted a university student who built a strategic friendship with his lecturer. He stood out simply because he was highly active during lectures, and he chose to stay behind after class to clean up the laboratory and do extra chores around the classroom. Unlike the vast majority of students who rush off the moment class finishes to play or get into mischief, he stayed behind to serve.
When an Asian businessman later approached the lecturer looking for computer-savvy interns, guess what happened? The lecturer immediately recommended him and his small circle of friends, those specific students who had become close to him through staying behind and helping out in the lab. This is exactly how he managed to secure his very first job. He told us that up to this day, that connection is alive and well, and they still regularly share lucrative business deals. This shows just how powerful networking can be and teaches us that once we make these connections, they can become lasting assets if we nurture them well.
Common Networking Challenges
We then openly shifted our discussion to the challenges and fears that people face around networking. One major concern raised was that people are often unsure if they will run into individuals who share the same values when they go out to network. One member shared a discouraging experience where he attended an old school networking event. He was excited to meet his former schoolmates, but the event turned into a complete nightmare. One classmate borrowed a sum of money from him, and up to this day, they have never paid it back. Because of this, he became very wary of networking events, fearing they are spaces where ill-meaning people go to take advantage of others.
Another common challenge was shared by a member who noted that when you get jobs or business deals through informal networks, the arrangements often lack professional formality. Because of the casual way the opportunity comes to you, there are sometimes no contracts at all. Even when contracts do exist, they tend to be poorly written or legally weak.
How to Overcome the Obstacles
How did we encourage our fellowship members to navigate these professional hazards?
To the person worried about conflicting values, we encouraged him not to shy away from networking events. Instead, we told him to lead by example. When you step into a networking space, the very first thing you should carry openly on your sleeve and across your shoulders is your Christian faith and your values. If others around you choose to misbehave, you must set the standard of high integrity. Let it never be said that you are the person who borrowed money and failed to repay it, or that you are the one who misbehaved at an event. We encouraged everyone to engage the corporate world boldly and be the light.
To the gentleman worried about weak contracts and a lack of formality, we encouraged him to reframe the situation and focus on the deeper lessons. Jobs, tasks, and projects that come through casual connections are still incredible opportunities to learn, improve your CV, and master new skills. Even if you occasionally end up not being paid what you expected, the practical experience, character growth, and professional connections you gain through that work are permanent assets that no one can ever take away from you.
Our Next Steps
In our concluding session, we shared the practical steps we are going to take to enable us to take our professional networking to the next level. A lot of great ideas were put forward, with people committing to attending more physical industry events and becoming far more active within their respective school alumni associations.
For my own part, I shared about the importance of being more active on LinkedIn. I had previously gone ahead and improved my profile by updating a few details here and there, but during this roundtable, I promised that I would take it a step further. I committed to publishing more articles and making regular posts such as this one. Overall, it was a truly eye-opening event on a life-changing topic, and we are excited to see the fruits of these connections.
