Stop Waiting for Purpose; It’s Right in Front of You
This past weekend, I had the privilege of speaking to the men of Cohort 13 in the Man of Honour program on the topic "A Cause to Live For." My message was clear: we are called to be men on a mission. However, too many of us are stuck, held back by the pervasive lie that we must first "discover our purpose" before we can truly begin to live.
The Deception of Waiting
It's a common mindset: "Once I find my life's purpose, then I'll start doing something meaningful." Yet, while people wait for this grand revelation, they often miss countless daily opportunities to serve, to love, and to make an impact right where they are.
The truth is, purpose isn’t something you find; it’s something you live.
Love God, Serve People. That’s the Mission
Jesus summarised it in two commands that clarify our mission:
Love God with all your heart.
Love your neighbour as yourself.
And how exactly do we love our neighbour? By serving them. This, in its simplest form, is our daily purpose. Instead of waiting for some monumental, dramatic calling, we should be actively using our gifts, skills, and experiences today to help those around us.
Jesus: The Perfect Example
Jesus' ultimate purpose was to die on the cross for humanity. But He didn't just wait around for that moment. Every single day, He was healing, teaching, discipling and helping people. He didn't say, "I'll just eat, sleep, and wait to die." No, He served diligently right up until the very end.
If Jesus, who understood His mission better than anyone, didn't waste time waiting, why do we?
The Warning of the Priest and Levite
Consider the parable of the Good Samaritan. The priest and the Levite were men who we can all agree understood their calling; they were meant to serve God. Yet, when they encountered a wounded man in desperate need, they walked right past him. Why? Because they believed they had more important "spiritual" work to do.
They were so fixated on their "big purpose" that they completely missed their immediate, real purpose: serving the person right in front of them.
Live Your Purpose Now
Here’s the liberating truth: Purpose is a journey, not a destination. You don’t wait for it. You live it every single day by serving, loving, and making a tangible difference right where you are.
Stop waiting for perfect clarity or a grand revelation. Start now. Find one way you can help someone TODAY. Use what you have, right where you are. That's how you truly find and fulfill your purpose.
What’s one way you can serve someone today?
